Acorn SHELTERGUARD® Tree Shelters

The Shelterguard® material, unique to Acorn, is manufactured by co-extruding a laminate of 12mm square plastic netting and a tinted polyethylene lining.

Shelterguard® tree shelters offers protection from smaller animals including rabbits in the 600mm size tree guards and offers deer protection in the tree shelters manufactured from 1.2m - 1.8m high.

The Shelterguard® material has been specifically designed to photo-degrade in a two stage process, with the polyethylene lining breaking up first, once the tree is established enough to no longer require the shelter environment, leaving a free draining netting to continue to provide support and browsing protection.

This two stage design makes the Shelterguard® plastic tree shelters more versatile than traditional solid tree guard tubes and means it will be particularly suited to a warming climate, as the polyethylene liner will degrade quicker in stronger sunlight, leaving a well ventilated mesh tree guard.

Shelterguard® Plus cut to size
SHELTERGUARD tree guards supplied as flat cut pieces

Cut pieces of Shelterguard® are very versatile as they are available in a much wider range of sizes than pre-formed tubes and make an economical alternative. The prices listed are for the most common sizes, however, we can make 9cm, 15cm and 20cm diameter shelters at any height, and 60cm tall shelters to any diameter.

We also offer the option of rolling and banding sets of 4 or 5 pieces of material for an extra 15%. This pre-forming makes the shelters easier to construct in the field and is particularly helpful for smaller diameters.

Our standard Shelterguard® has a polythene lining with a minimum life expectancy of 3 to 5 years and a netting with a minimum life expectancy of 5 to 7 years.

We can manufacture the Acorn Shelterguard in the standard specification or in various other materials / designs to suit differing plant species or climates :

Biodegradable Shelterguard - NEW - We have now developed a biodegradable version of our Shelterguard material. Please contact us for further details. Following a number of years of development work, including both advanced weathering and field trials, we are now ready to launch Acorn’s new Bio-shelter, a biodegradable version of our popular Shelterguard® range. These shelters have been designed in collaboration with a specialist plastics firm and will function in exactly the same way as our current shelters, ensuring that browsing protection is not compromised, but will begin to biodegrade after about 7 years. Once the guard has split and fallen off the tree, contact with the soil will enable microbes to accelerate their work, gradually breaking down the plastic harmlessly into water, carbon dioxide and biomass.

This process is fully compliant with EC 200272 and the forthcoming BS 8472. The Bio-shelter range will be competitively priced at just 20% more than our standard shelters and will be available across the full Shelterguard® and Treeguard range.

Ventilated Shelterguard® - The polythene lining on all Shelterguards can be micro-perforated to provide some ventilation, to reduce humidity and temperature and maintain carbon dioxide levels within the tube. Ventilation is particularly recommended for beech which can suffer in an enclosed tube.

The High Exposure Shelterguard® - The High Exposure Shelterguard® is a version in which the polythene lining will break-up more rapidly, helping to harden trees on more exposed sites. The polythene lining is clear and has a minimum life expectancy of only 2 to 3 years, though the netting has a life expectancy of 5 to 7 years.

Alternative Colours
- The standard Shelterguard colour is green but we can also manufacture the material in brown or black to order.
